Scouting and First Christian Church

Scout Sunday, February 3, 2008 – Kit Marty

The Boy Scouts of America designates the Sunday that falls before February 8 (Scouting Anniversary Day) as Scout Sunday, which is the primary date to recognize the contributions of young people and adults to Scouting.  First Christian Church will celebrate the contributions of our Scouting units, Troop 507 and Pack 3507 on Sunday, February 3rd at the 10:30am Worship.

Troop 507 is now in its 77th year of continuous operation and four of its Scouts earned the rank of Eagle in 2007.  Troop 507  is considered one of the premier Boy Scout Troops in Chippewa District of Great Trail Council.  Cut Scout Pack 3507’s program is outstanding and because of this, it has drawn great attention in Medina and has now grown to 85 registered Cub Scouts.  Please come and celebrate their achievements on Scout Sunday.

Boy Scout Troop 507

Do you realize that in October, Troop 507, sponsored by FCC, was officially 75 years old on October 1, 2006?  The Troop is now in its 77th consecutive year and is going strong

The Troop, under the leadership of Scoutmaster Todd Schafer and Committee Chairman Pete Metzloff continues to be one of the premier Boy Scout Troops in Great Trail Council. They are known for two things, as they are "the Picnic Table Troop", selling upwards of 250 handmade picnic tables each year, and the "High Adventure Troop", as their outdoor program is centered on a special canoeing or backpacking adventure described below.

The Boy Scouts of America grants charters to organizations such as churches, service clubs, and other community groups to operate Scouting groups. These organizations use the Scouting program for community outreach and to help them serve the needs of local youth. Scouting's time-tested, high-quality youth development program affords organizations higher visibility in the community and increased service to youth.

Scouting teaches skills that help youth develop into quality citizens. Organizations that are interested in nurturing youth for the betterment of the community have found Scouting to be a positive form of community outreach.  The ultimate goal for any Scout is to become an Eagle, something that only about 2 out of every 100 Scouts attain. In 2007, four Scouts (Nick H., Scott W., Brent G. and Sean H. earned the rank of Eagle Scout.  Troop 507 now has 63 Eagle Scouts.

Since 1985, the Troop has made a challenging backpacking or canoe trip the focal point of its annual camping program, going to locations throughout the United States and Canada.  In 2007, the Troop had two crews go to the wilderness of Allagash, Maine, for a 1-week and a 2-week canoeing adventure.  This Summer, the Troop will have two different backpacking adventures:  1) a one-week trek to Isle Royale National Park in the upper peninsula of Michigan; and 2) a 2-week trek to the Grand Tetons in Wyoming.

The Medina National Guard unit has recently been deployed.  Six members of Troop 507 are part of that deployment:  Andy Demczyk, Eagle Scout Joe Demczyk, Nick Harvey, Mike Hansen, Rob Howington and Eagle Scout Matt Tesar.

The key adult leadership for Troop 507 is currently as follows:

Cub Scout Pack 3507

As is the case with the Boy Troop, First Christian Church is the sponsoring organization for Cub Scout Pack 3507.

Cub Scout Pack 3507 had a very successful year in 2007.  Led by Cubmaster Joe Toth and Committee Chairman Dan Mardovin, the Pack has continued to grow, reaching 86 Cub Scouts (in 10 Dens) this year.  They are a very active group of boys, ranging in age from 6 (Tiger Cubs) through 10 (Webelos). Throughout the year, they have Den meetings, and during their monthly Pack meetings, they have a variety of activities.  From the following list, you can see what they did in 2007 and some of the reasons they are growing so fast!
