2008-2009 Education Opportunities
Look at the choices you have ...
Nursery Care
Offered during the 8:16 Worship, 9:15 Education Hour (Sunday School),
and 10:30 Worship. Babies & Toddlers (up to age 3) are cared for
by people who have a heart for our little ones in our Nursery (Sanctuary
level, east hallway)!
8:16 and 10:30 Extended Session (during Worship)
The PreK - 5th Graders begin their time in the worship in the
Sanctuary at 8:16 and 10:30 a.m. and then go downstairs to class after
a brief time in worship. They return upstairs to the Sanctuary
during the closing worship song. (During "Fifth Sundays", we
participate in Worship as a "Family of God"! Everyone - except
children in the Nursery - worships together in the Sanctuary. We
make a special effort to include children on that day! They have
their own worship bulletins so they can follow along and check-off the
worship as it happens. We have children's books, bags of
marshmallows, crayons, and coloring pages to occupy children during the
sermon time.)
Sunday School
Sunday
School starts at 9:15 a.m. and runs until 10:15 a.m. (in between the 8:16
& 10:30 Worship Services).
Adult Class Choices:
-
Seekers Class (meets in the
Library) -
A multi-generational class that utilizes "The Present Word"
curriculum. They are a teacher & discussion generated group that focuses
primarily on Biblical study. This Fall's focus is "The New Testament
Community". This topic surveys the New Testament ...
challenging people to see the New Testament through the lens of community.
The study begins by first looking at the four gospels and the birth of a new
community, and then it moves to an exploration of the development and work
of this new community. The study concludes with the growing pains the new
community experienced through conflict, struggle and persecution as
described in the epistles.
-
Wineskins
Class (meets in the
Wellness Room) - A multi-generational class that will be utilizing DVD-based
studies and discussion for the Fall Quarter.
September - NOOMA
NOOMA uses a new format…they are
short films (10 - 13 min.) that really speak to people today. Each NOOMA
film with Rob Bell touches on faith issues that people care about and want
to talk through. Want to know more about NOOMA? Check out
www.nooma.com
October - LUCY SHOW BIBLE STUDY

scriptures where Bible study meets popular culture. The episodes are not
remastered, so expect classic TV quality. Here are the lessons on this volume:

3) Lucy Meets the Law on accusations 4) Lucy In Show Business on devotion. Go to
www.entmin.com/htm/lucy_2.htm to

November - PARABLES OF JESUS
Take a look at the parables, miracles, and prayers of Jesus.
Taught and written by Bible professors, this DVD study series with participant's
guides explores the historical background of the Bible, its text, and its
application for life today.
December - A CHRISTMAS CAROL
Meet Scrooge - a man so selfish, not even Christmas puts him
in a giving mood. When Bob Cratchit tries to stoke the office fire, Scrooge
denies the man coal. When nephew Fred invites him to dinner, Uncle Scrooge
rudely refuses. Only later is Scrooge himself at a loss, when the ghostly Jacob
Marley appears to accuse his selfish soul.
Children's Education:
-
Preschool (meets in the downstairs education area, south end of the building).
They will be focusing on a different topic each month! September's
focus will be "Sharing God's Love in Our Family".
-
K-4th Grades (meets in large Sunday School room in the downstairs
education area - south end of the building - and in Fellowship Hall).
September's focus will be "People Who Made a Difference"
(Deborah/Jeremiah/The Centurion's Servant / The Woman at the Well) and we
will be utilizing Movies, Music/Movement, Storytelling,
Computers/Puppetry.
We
will be using the fun, Bible-infused "Rotation Model"
style of teaching! We will be concentrating on one major story/Biblical theme
per month using storytelling, music, DVD's, science, dance/movement, games,
puppets, etc.. Neil MacQueen, one of the pioneers of
The Workshop Rotation Model
gives this description,
"Here's why it works: The Workshop Rotation Model
concentrates on the major stories of the Bible…The model's philosophy recognizes
that kids not only love repetition, but they need it to develop a lasting memory
and understanding of content. The multi-intelligences (creative methods)
approach in the model isn't a fad or merely kid-friendly, it is calculated to
take advantage of our student's God-given thirst for multi-modal learning.
Traditional designs have long attempted to teach through multimedia, but their
frenetic lessons with six or more different steps, a game, a craft, Bible study
and music all in 45 minutes left…teachers breathless. And few {teachers] had the
gifts to teach in each mode properly."
Check

for
more information on The Rotation Model.
Preteens are a morphing bunch! They're too mature for
children's curriculum but still haven't had much experience at being a Junior
Higher! The need to "grapple" with life in- between - so we'll be using a
curriculum actually called Grapple specifically for preteens! Grapple delivers
Bible truths in a preteen way PLUS our 6th graders will get their very own safe
and secure online community to connect with each other and their Sunday School
Coaches/Ministry Staff! (How cool is THAT!)
Youth Education:
-
Chi Rho (7th & 8th Grade) Sunday School (meets in the
downstairs education area, the first room you come to beyond Fellowship
Hall)
Since 7th & 8th Graders are "emerging" from preteen to teen
years, we're using a curriculum called e|Merge! e|Merge uses large-group
teaching enhanced by digital media and small-group discussion. This curriculum
utilizes interactive DVD video segments, PowerPoint games, & printable handouts.
Fall Quarter's topics include: Bling (money), Contagious Faith: (Evangelism),
Scars (Hurts), Elevate (Friends).
